Milwaukee Brewers vs San Diego Padres Predictions

A matchup between two of the NL’s top teams hits the TBS airwaves on Tuesday when the Central leading Milwaukee Brewers visit the San Diego Padres in the middle of a three-game set. The Padres enter the week with a better record than the Brewers, but stuck in the West along with the LA Dodgers has San Diego just a half-game back in the standings.

The Pads are coming off a highly-successful road trip that saw them win seven of nine games, including a weekend sweep of the Giants. While they have MLB’s best road record, the Padres are just 10-7 at Petco Park and they dropped all three games to the Crew last season.

Odds Analysis

It wasn’t the way the Brewers wanted to start a season-long road trip, but as they say it is what it is. They seized control of the NL Central behind three consecutive victories and wins in five of six before being routed by the Nationals 8-2 on Sunday. They also suffered a blow to their pitching staff with Freddy Peralta leaving Sunday’s game with shoulder tightness. That throws a wrench in the plans with the Brewers scheduled to play 11 games in the next 10 days. That has little impact on the first few games of the trip. The Brewers will stick to their usual rotation with Corbin Burnes getting the nod on Tuesday.

The Brewers are trying to find some consistency on offense. They average 4.7 runs per game and have slugged 55 homers to rank fourth in MLB, but their team batting average of .238 is middle of the pack. They’ve scored two runs or fewer in 13 games while reaching double figures five times. That’s been good enough to back a staff that sports a 3.46 ERA putting the Brewers $180 in the black on the moneyline. Milwaukee won five of seven meetings between the clubs last season with Burnes tossing 6.0 scoreless innings in San Diego last April.

The Padres would probably like to stay on the road if they continue to have the success they’ve enjoyed. Prior to their just completed trip, they dropped two of three at Petco to the Cubs giving up 17 runs. They took two of three in Atlanta and Philadelphia before sweeping division rival San Francisco closing the week with four straight wins and seven wins in nine games. San Diego got outstanding pitching on the trip allowing three runs or less in six of the last seven outings with a pair of shutouts.

And the offense looks to be coming around erupting for 10 runs and 17 hits on Sunday while totaling 20 runs against the Giants. While they are the most profitable team in MLB up $961 on the moneyline, all that damage has been done on the road. San Diego is just 10-7 at Petco in the black $74. They also cash the UNDER nearly 65 percent of the time in those games.

Probable Pitchers

Last year’s NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes (1-2, 2.26 ERA) has put up solid numbers in 2022 except for the win/loss totals. He’s gone five starts without a win despite allowing one or zero earned runs in three of those outings. He blanked the Giants on two hits with 11 strikeouts over 6.2 innings and left with a 1-0 lead before the pen gave it up. Since his only win Burnes is 0-2 with a 2.20 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. He is coming off his worst outing of the season allowing four earned on seven hits with a pair of homers against Atlanta. He took a ND in the extra-inning victory.

His only two starts against the Padres came last season. He tossed 6.0 shutout innings of four-hit ball with 10 Ks in a 6-0 win in San Diego in April. A month later he gave up four runs on only two hits in a 7-1 loss where his wildness and poor defense didn’t help.

The Padres counter with 2018 AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell (0-1, 7.36 ERA), who’s making his second start of the season after a groin injury delayed his season. Snell was slated to start the team’s fourth game of the season before coming up lame. He made three rehab starts before taking the bump last week in Philadelphia giving up three hits and three runs with five strikeouts over 3.2 innings. “I thought Blake had good stuff. I would like to see him have a little more command and he’s going to be great because his stuff is there,” acting manager Ryan Christenson said.

Prediction: Milwaukee Brewers and UNDER

Brewers vs Padres Predictions

Two tough hurlers against offenses that have struggled have me taking a long look at the UNDER in this matchup. Burnes has been tough and Snell is working himself into the rotation. And both pens have been solid as well. If the Brewers avoid pitching to Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer in high leverage spots they have a good chance of winning this game.
