The days leading up to the NCAA Tournament are some of the most intense for college basketball fans and bettors across the country. Who’s primed for a first round upset? What sleeper team can make a deep run? Who will ultimately win it all?
Often times, what’s lost in the shuffle are some of the prop bets that are out there, and BookMaker.eu has released some juicy ones that could provide some big-time payouts for savvy bettors.
Lowest Seed to Advance in the Round of 64
- 12: -139
- 13: +281
- 14: +298
- 15: +942
- 16: +2140
This is an interesting year for top seeds in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. All of the No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 seeds are favored by at least 8.5-points as of the publication of this article, and if that was to hold up, it would be the first time in the tournament’s history that all of the Top 16 seeds were favored by at least that amount.
With Middle Tennessee lined at pick ’em right now against Minnesota in a 5 vs. 12 matchup, it only makes sense that the lowest seed to advance would be a No. 12 seed.
We Think That’s a Sucker’s Bet
Remember that you’re basically betting on a 16-team parlay with a kicker at that point. Even if you go under the assumption that all of the No. 1 seeds have no chance at losing, parlaying all of the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds together to win would pay a price of +175. Then you need one of the No. 12 seeds to beat a No. 5 in order to be a winner.
If you really believe in the favorites that much, simply parlay all of the top 16 seeds together for a much bigger payday.
That’s why if you’re going to bet on this prop, you should be betting on a No. 15 seed to be the lowest to advance. Sure, the matchups here aren’t exactly juicy, but they never really are for the No. 15s. Who saw Middle Tennessee beating Michigan State last year?
The four No. 15 seeds are set at
- North Dakota +1300
- Troy +1750
- Jacksonville State +2750
- Northern Kentucky +2800
In order to cash this bet at +942, you’d need just one of these four to win. The parlay price on the four No. 2 seeds? That only adds up to -893. It’s a good overlay for sure, especially when you consider the fact that the price on a single No. 2 seed to lose to a No. 15 is +611 at another one of BookMaker’s props.
Will Three or More No. 1 Seeds Reach the Final Four?
- Yes +425
- No -700
Common sense suggests that at least one team out of Duke, Kentucky or Arizona will make the Final Four, and none of those teams are No. 1 seeds. If two of them make it, our bet is busted, and that doesn’t even include the other 60 teams in the field. But let’s remember who we’re dealing with here as these top choices.
Let’s Break This Bet Down
There was never a debate about Kansas or Villanova being the top seeds in their respective brackets, and the Jayhawks have a relatively easy Midwest to navigate.
Villanova has a challenging road for sure where a lot of things could go wrong, but getting to play the second weekend of the tourney at Madison Square Garden should be helpful for the purposes of having the crowd on its side.
The same can be said for Gonzaga. The Bulldogs aren’t necessarily a better team than Arizona in the West Region, but they do have one win over the Wildcats already this season. If by chance it isn’t Arizona who advances to the Elite Eight, there are good odds that Gonzaga is going to be the only team out in San Jose who hails from the West Coast. This could easily pose a big advantage as well.
North Carolina? It’s still perhaps the freakiest, most athletic team in the nation and is always a tough club to oust in March.
Two seasons ago, three of the four No. 1 seeds reached the Final Four. It’s a rare feat for sure, something that has only happened five times since the field has expanded to 64 teams in 1985, but at a price of +425, we’re willing to take a shot in 2017.
