At one point the New York Yankees were the best team in baseball threatening the MLB record for wins. Just to show the effect a long season has on a team, the Bombers are now clinging to a lead in the AL East. The Yankees have an 8-game bulge but the lead felt more secure a few weeks ago when it was in double figures. Losing 14 of 17 games opens the door and the rest of the division has slowly crept up, but when the team starts getting back some injured players they could return to their winning ways.
And with the New York Mets holding onto the NL East lead, fans in the Big Apple are dreaming of a Subway Series in October rather than this tilt on Tuesday. It’s still a good time when the crosstown rivals meet with the capper of the season series airing on TBS.

Season So Far…
It was an emotional weekend for the Metropolitans ending with a dramatic comeback victory over Philadelphia on Sunday. And it was a huge game in more ways than one. Coming off a series where they dropped three of four to the Braves with their lead shrinking in the NL East, the Mets needed some things to go their way. A lot of games with a Saturday doubleheader taxed the staff, but the Mets more than held their own getting plenty of offense to offset any problems on the mound. They already lost Carlos Carrasco to the IL and Taijuan Walker is on the shelf. A couple of young arms saved the situation with the Mets building their lead back to four games by rallying for a 10-9 win over the Phils on Sunday.
We often talk about pitching and how teams that have it tend to be better off. The Mets stayed afloat when Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom missed chunks of time. Now they’ll have to navigate without the injured players for a bit. It has allowed the Mets to showcase their offense, and it’s a good one. They rank among the top-5 in runs per game and team batting average and scored 26 runs in taking three of four from the Phils cashing the OVER in three games. The Mets have the highest OVER percentage in MLB at 54.4 percent.
The Yankees built up such a big cushion during the first half that they’ve been able to withstand their recent funk and still hold a sizable lead in the AL East. They entered the All-Star break at 64-28 with a 13-game lead. But they won just 10 of their first 30 post-break games with home wins even hard to come by. The Yankees no longer have the best home record in MLB falling to 42-20 by losing seven of eight. They ended the slump momentarily by beating Toronto 4-2 on Sunday.
Probable Pitchers
He’s only human, though sometimes it appears that Jacob deGrom (2-1, 2.31 ERA) is a machine. Against the Braves last time out deGrom yielded as many runs as he did in his previous three starts combined. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing for the Yankees since the former two-time Cy Young Award winner rarely has back to back poor outings. And his numbers weren’t bad against the Braves giving up three runs on four hits with nine strikeouts over 6.2 innings, but they weren’t deGrom-like numbers. Making his season debut on Aug. 2, deGrom allowed three hits and a run with six punchouts while compiling a 1.62 ERA and 0.43 WHIP over his first three outings. He has ordinary career numbers against the Yankees going 2-4 with a 3.51 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 41 innings, but he hasn’t faced them since 2018.
It hasn’t been the best start for the career of Frankie Montas (4-10, 3.87) in pinstripes. Since being acquired from Oakland at the deadline, Montas has allowed 14 runs on 18 hits in 14 innings with the club going 1-2 in those games. He had a respectable season and career in Oakland prior to the deal with a 3.18 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 104.2 innings this season. Pitching under the New York microscope is different animal and some never figure it out. If Montas doesn’t start dealing like he did with the Athletics he’ll be remembered as a bust.
Mets vs Yankees Predictions
When a team is struggling it always seems to get an opponent’s best. In the two-game set the Mets are scheduled to send Scherzer and deGrom to the bump. Normally I wouldn’t have a problem with the Yankees against some of the best hurlers, but with injuries and recent struggles it almost feels like stealing money to back deGrom, the Mets’ bullpen and an opportunistic offense.
