Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Francisco Giants Predictions

A slow start to the second half for the San Francisco Giants started when they were swept by their rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers in a four-game set leading to a seven-game losing streak that dropped them below .500. The hopes of a second straight NL West title were slim before that and were all but eliminated afterwards.

But the Giants are still in the thick of the race in the newly expanded playoff format so stringing together some wins is a must. The teams meet on Tuesday in the second game of a four-game series on TBS with the Giants looking for payback. The rivals played nine games ahead of this series with the home team winning every game, a trend the Giants hope continues.

Season So Far…

The Dodgers just keep winning games putting them atop the overall MLB standings as a new betting week gets underway. They came out of the break on fire beating the Giants four straight to run their winning streak to eight games. The stumbled a bit against Washington but have gone 8-3 since the pause. They overtook the Yankees for the highest winning percentage at .673. The Dodgers won over 80 percent of their games in July (21-5) outscoring their opponents 147-83 becoming the World Series favorite once again.

There is no secret to their success. LA has an explosive offense averaging over 5.2 runs while boasting a top-three team batting average despite season long slumps from guys like Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger. With a team best 23, Mookie Betts leads five players with at least 13 home runs helping the Dodgers rank seventh in MLB. Couple that with a pitching staff that boasts MLB’s best ERA and WHIP and the wins just follow. That’s helped the Dodgers be the most profitable team in MLB on the runline going 60-41 ATS up $1,802.

The Giants bounced back from their post-break skid taking three of four from the Cubs over the weekend giving them some momentum heading into this series. It’s not like they need added motivation against their biggest rival after getting swept in four games a little over a week ago. And when the teams met in the Bay Area in June it was the Giants doing the sweeping winning three games by a combined score of 12-4.

Overall the Giants have been a disappointment playing .500 ball more than 100 games into the campaign. The expectations were high after winning 107 games last season in what one player called the perfect storm of awesomeness. Now they’ve been one of the biggest losers, both in the standings and at the betting window. They are down nearly $1000 on the moneyline, though at 29-23 at Oracle Park the losses aren’t nearly as bad.

Probable Pitchers

Despite a pitching staff that’s dealt with injuries/suspensions all season, the group has excelled in large part to Tyler Anderson (11-1, 2.61 ERA), who’s been lights out this season. The veteran lefty has not allowed an earned run over his last three starts covering 19 innings and has given up just 11 hits with a 0.79 WHIP in that span.

And he’s been equally good all season giving up more than three earned runs just three times in his 17 starts. Anderson was good in his last start against the Giants giving up an unearned run on four hits over six innings. He didn’t factor in the decision, but the Dodgers rallied for the win going undefeated in Anderson’s last five starts and 14-3 in all of his starts.

Alex Wood (7-8, 4.11 ERA) takes the bump for the third time this season against his former team looking to continue the success he enjoyed during July. In five starts last month Wood went 2-1 with a 1.65 ERA giving up just five earned runs and 17 hits over 27.1 innings with a 0.80 WHIP. Wood is 0-2 against the Dodgers this season pitching to a 4.82 ERA over 9.1 innings. He’s given up 11 homers this season with three of those served up to the Dodgers. This is the first time in his last five starts against the Dodgers he’ll face them at home where his numbers across the board have been better.

Dodgers vs Giants Predictions

Unlike last season when the teams fought neck and neck for the division title, the Giants are well down in the standings looking at one of the three wild card spots. And they’ve had success against their SoCal rival at home winning seven of the last nine meetings at Oracle Park. But it’s hard to keep up that level of play against a better team. And the Dodgers are the best.
