The Subway Series all New York baseball fans want to see would take place in October. But in the meantime the battle between the New York Yankees and New York Mets on Tuesday night will have to do. Both teams are currently in a playoff position with the Yankees owning the best record in MLB and the Mets holding a slim grasp in the NL East with the second-best record in the senior circuit.
With both clubs in a good spot to start the second half there is talk of a rematch form 2000 when the clubs met in the World Series. The Mets avoided their longest losing streak of the season ending a three-game slide with a win over San Diego on Sunday, and they’ve won five of the last seven meetings with their cross town rival.

Season So Far…
The Yankees were so good during the first half of the season that a slow start post All-Star break might be a concern to some. They dropped a doubleheader to Houston and went 2-3 in their first five out of the break. Putting things in perspective, if the Yankees played .500 ball over the remainder of the season they’d still end up with around 100 wins. Winning 68 percent of your games puts you in good company and can make backers a lot of money. The Yankees are one of the more profitable teams in MLB, along with the Mets, in the black over $900 on the moneyline.
Looking a lot like the best club in the majors on Sunday, the Yankees did everything that put them in that spot in a 6-0 win over the Orioles. Nestor Cortes and Clarke Schmidt combined for the shutout and Aaron Judge hit his MLB leading 37th homer. They lead the majors in runs scored and homers while posting the third best staff ERA. They scored at least six runs in 10 of their previous 16 games cashing the OVER 13 times in that span.
The Mets took the NL East lead in early April and have held onto it ever since. The margin is closing, though, with the red-hot Braves on their heels. Up 10.5 games at the start of June, the Mets saw the advantage whittled to a half game after dropping three in a row. They avoided a season-high losing streak with an 8-5 win over the Padres on Sunday. It’s not like the Mets have played poorly over the last two months winning nearly 56 percent of their games, but they find themselves in a close race.
There’s a good chance the Mets avoid the second-half collapse they experienced last season. They’ve played the entire year without Jacob deGrom and most of it without Max Scherzer yet the staff has held together with the sixth-best ERA in baseball while averaging more than 4.6 runs. It’s helped the Mets be the third-most profitable team up nearly $1100 on the moneyline.
Probable Pitchers
Most pitchers with 19 starts have more decisions than Jordan Montgomery (3-2, 3.24 ERA), but he’s kept the Yankees in games despite his low win total. He allowed a run in each of the first two innings last time out against Houston before settling down. He lasted 6.1 innings giving up seven hits allowing his mates to tie the game before falling in the ninth.
The Yankees lost his last four starts despite Montgomery pitching to a 3.13 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP in that span. Part of the problem has been a lack of run support. The Yankees averaged just 2.75 runs in those four games with the last three losses all by one run. Montgomery has struggled in three starts against the Mets going 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. His last start against the Mets was at Citi Field allowing five earned on seven hits in 3.1 frames.
It’s been awhile since Taijuan Walker (7-2, 2.55 ERA) pitched, last taking the bump on July 16 when he held the Cubs to one run on four hits in six innings. In the meantime he had his achy shoulder and knee looked at, but claims it was routine and he’s good to go for the opener. If he pitches the way he did in the first half the Mets should be in good shape. In his last seven starts he’s 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and .198 OBA. He’s allowed just one homer over 45 innings in that stretch and faces a team that leads the majors by a lot in that category. Keeping the ball in the yard will help his success rate.
Yankees at Mets Predictions
The Mets are hoping their outburst Sunday carries over to this series. They’ve been able to get to Montgomery in the past and they just touched up one of the best hurlers in the game in Joe Musgrove. Walker has been a workhorse but his second half was delayed due to his ailments. I see runs being scored which why I’m backing the OVER.
