Novak Djokovic is a massive favorite to capture his fourth straight Wimbledon title and seventh overall while Iga Swiatek is heavily favored to win the ladies side. The absence of some of the top players in the sport on both sides of the draw puts a damper on the festivities, but two weeks of volleys and backhands won’t take away from the excitement the tennis world’s most prestigious tournament is sure to supply.
With world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev banned from the tournament for being of Russian descent and No. 2 ranked Alexander Zverev out following a devastating knee injury, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were 1-2 in the gentlemen’s draw meaning they can only meet in the final, assuming they both make it that far. Nadal had an impressive four-set quarterfinal win over Joker en route to his 14th French Open title. However, Rafa’s struggles on grass are legendary and he somehow battled through a foot injury to win at Roland Garros.
Swiatek won her second Grand Slam in Paris a few weeks ago and has her eyes set on a Wimbledon title as a big favorite. However, her recent play is overshadowed by the absence of Ashleigh Barty and the return of Serena Williams. A seven-time Wimbledon winner with 23 Grand Slam titles, Williams hasn’t played competitively since being forced out of the first round at this tournament last year. On top of her titles, Serena also has four runner-up finishes so she’s no stranger to center court. But can she overcome the onslaught of young talent?
We will have a new champion on the ladies side with the retirement earlier this year of Barty. Though odds suggest otherwise, the ladies side is more open. The winner of the previous six singles titles is in the field with Simona Halep the most recent in 2019. Williams won twice (2015-16) in that span with Angelique Kerber, Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova all triumphant.

Djokovic has been unbeatable on the grass courts which is why he’s a prohibitive favorite to win a fourth straight title. There isn’t much value backing him at negative odds so let’s take a look at who could pull an upset. Having Nadal in the field is a plus for name recognition, but his struggles on grass are too much to overlook.
Second favorite Matteo Berrettini offers some value at his price. He’s 2 for 2 on grass following wins at the Stuttgart Open and the Queen’s Club prep event, also reaching the final at Wimbledon last year. With 10/1 odds or longer the trio of Hubert Hurkacz, Felix Auger Aliassime and Carlos Alcaraz deserve a look. But their moment in the sun will come later after Djokovic hangs up his racket.

Swaitek make her win at the French Open look easy dropping just one set and dispatching Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the final. Gauff is a distant second on the Wimbledon betting board with Williams, who hasn’t played in a year, fifth on the list. That tells us a lot about the ladies draw.
Don’t be overly concerned with the numbers, though. Swiatek admittedly has trouble on grass and a shoulder injury is something to watch, leaving the door open for a number of other talented players. Williams is a huge attraction and a fan-favorite, but her advanced age and limited action has me worried. Former world No. 1 Halep won here in 2019 and after a brief slump she’s regained that top form.
Wimbledon Predictions
There are better options in the ladies draw with several former champs hitting the court. There hasn’t been a repeat winner since Serena in 2016. Swiatek is clearly a hot commodity however grass isn’t her friend opening the door for a better value pick. Could that be Halep? While there are better value picks on the gentlemen’s side there’s no one better than Djokovic. It’s his tournament to lose and he always raises his game at this time of year.
