The Numbers
1: The number of times Old Dominion has covered a spread against Power Five foes in its history. The Monarchs are just 1-4 ATS in their five games against the big boys in their history, and that one came back in their first year as members of the FBS. Now, ODU gets to play against Virginia Tech, and it will mark the first time that 17-year old true freshman quarterback Steven Williams starts in a game in his collegiate career.
6: The number of the top eight teams in the country that have to go on the road in Week 4 of the campaign. Granted, none of Alabama, USC, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State or Washington are truly facing serious tests since they’re all taking on unranked teams, and all of them are favored by more than a touchdown. But as we know, the madness that is the college football season seems to start earlier and earlier every year, and this could make for a truly chaotic weekend.
13: The number of points Vanderbilt has allowed in three games this season. In a related story, the Commodores are +18.5 against Alabama. Rare is the afternoon where Nashville is the center of the college football world, but Vandy is making that happen this week after starting at 3-0 with the Tide rolling into town. Kyle Shurmur hasn’t been up against a defense quite like this yet, and his Commodores had better “anchor down” defensively if they want to have any shot against the best team in America.
21: The number of days off that both Miami and Florida State have had since their opening week games against Bethune Cookman and Alabama respectively. Hurricane Irma diverted both teams for two weeks, including losing the game that they were scheduled to play against each other that they’ll now place on October 7. It’s kind of like starting over at this point for the Hurricanes and Seminoles after such a long layoff, and both teams are only relatively modest favorites against Toledo and NC State in what should be emotional home games on Saturday.
39.5: The number of points Ohio State is favored by over UNLV. So if UNLV was favored by 45 against Howard and Ohio State is favored by 39.5 against UNLV, does that mean that Ohio State would be favored by 84.5 against Howard? You get the point. This game shouldn’t even be remotely close. But hey, the UNLV/Howard game shouldn’t have been close either, and the Bison ultimately won that one in Sin City.
